What is Jainism?

Jainism is an ancient religion from India that teaches that the way to liberation and bliss is to live a life of harmlessness and renunciation.

Who was the founder of Jainism?

Jains believe that their religion is extremely ancient. The Lord Mahavira, who died in 527 BC, was the last of a long series of Tirthankaras. He followed an existing religion, which Jains believe was established by Rishabhdev, who was the first Tirthankara.

What is Jainism’s holy book?

Jainism’s holy book – is a collection of literature known as agam. Lord Mahavir’s teachings were compiled into many texts (sutras) by his disciples. Collectively, these texts are called the Jain canon, or agam literature.

What is so unique about the non-violence preached by Jainism?

Non-violence is a timeless and far-reaching concept that can be applied to every aspect of life. Non-violence does not mean merely avoiding physical violence, but it also means minimizing the violence of thought and speech.
