Jainism is a religion and philosophy originating in ancient India. Jains follow the teaching of the Tirthankaras. Janis are a small minority in India and have growing communities outside India. There are approximately 25 to 30 thousands Jains residing in the UK and most are migrant from East Africa Jains have significantly influenced the ethical, political and economic development of modern India. Jainism stresses spiritual independence and equality of all life with particular emphasis on non-violence and self control. The Jains are the best admired religious community in India, and increasingly so in the UK. They are represented widely in the business and professional classes. Jainism in Manchester took its roots in 1974. a larger immigrate population settled in Manchester and decided to form a community association called "The Jain Samaj" and enacted a constitution. Due to economic hardships the community worshipped and socialised in various venues around the city of Manchester.
